XBOX 360 Crashing? Get some string...

Do you have an XBOX 360 that's crashing or hanging? Well the good news is you probably don't have to send it back to Microsoft for replacement. I do expect to see a number of profiteers designing aftermarket cooling products, power supply coolers, and all kinds of XBOX 360 accessories that you probably don't need.

It is more than likely that the power supply is overheating. Some people are trying to blame the hardware, but I really don't think this is an issue. I've seen many people trying to pass blame on the GPU and this seems unreasonable to me. ATi designed the graphics chip for the unit and they had nothing to do with the production of the system, they just get a royalty. Sony is probably hoping that this launch is a flop, and it's very easy for the media to jump on the "bash Microsoft bandwagon" but lest we forget when the Sony PS2 was originally launched there was also a number of bugs that needed to be worked out. This should be expected with any new product.

I didn't have the hanging issue only because I always keep my power supplies in a vented area, and mine happens to be suspended. In any case, grab some string, and suspend the power supply in the air so you have ventilation around the entire supply. Then call Microsoft and ask for a replacement, because we don't want to start any fires. I'm guessing Microsoft will put out an immediate recall in order to avoid any frivolous lawsuit issues, like the one where someone claimed that their XBOX burned down their house. There’s nothing like living in a litigious society.

That really shouldn't have happened, couldn't they see it coming? Or do they just not test they're systems at all?
