I can’t tell you how many calls I received in the last week regarding NVIDIA secretly launching Quad SLI with Dell. I’m not prepared to get into details yet as I am unsure what the real story is. I spoke with Kelt Reeves over at Falcon-NW and he too has heard different stories from different people. In speaking with some folks over at Alienware, they are also a bit shocked by this sudden announcement. Needless to say we're all waiting for NVIDIA to give us an official response.
That being said I don't think Quad SLI with G70 is a realistic solution for an aircooled machine, it’s hardly efficient and it will run extremely hot. Of course all of the prototypes that were shown at CES were operating with the chassis open and it felt like a floor heater when you went near it. I’m sure part of the heat was the processor; couple that with four GPU’s and the cooling requirements would be insane.
I am sure there is a reasonable explanation as to why NVIDIA didn't choose partners who have the capability to launch such technology in a chassis where you can actually close the door, I am looking forward to their response.
The Inquirer interviewed us on this subject a couple of days ago. You can view this article for the official responses from Voodoo and Falcon-NW.
Kristopher over at Anandtech’s Dailytech wrote a brief story on it over here as well.

Ever since I read about this I've been checking your blog to see when you'd speak up. It's nice to see you can remain straight even when it is a company you seem to hold in very high regard that has screwed up...
