Google buys 10,000+ Dual Opteron Servers?

A few weeks ago I suggested that Google may become one of AMD’s largest customers in 2006 and judging by the numbers it looks to be true. Google continues to build their infrastructure on AMD technology though that should come as no surprise seeing as there was a recent announcement that they were indeed working with AMD.

I have some friends who work at Google and I know they're doing some huge upgrades there. In any case, as I understand it Google may have purchased another 10,000+ Dual AMD Opteron dual processor servers recently – that’s insane! I'm guessing that they shipped these servers to China to beef up their operations there -- regardless of where they go, it's a pretty impressive sale.

There is also speculation that Google is having problems with AMD and Nvidia hardware but that does not quite tell the entire story. Like any major hardware rollout there are always going to be technical issues to overcome. Imagine adding new hardware in any capacity to a large organization like Google - I believe the problem they face with the rollout has to do with the 64-bit software optimizations and other minor software related issues. Problems or not, it looks like Google will continue to eat up AMD Opterons as they improve their infrastructure.

Now, when Intel launches Woodcrest (their answer to Opteron 200) we should see some good competition on the 2P side, but it could take time to ramp up. In the meantime AMD should still have things wrapped up on 4P and beyond for some time to come.

In any case, I wish the Google team good luck with their expansion. Here's to free VOIP for everyone! Well, we can only hope.

I wonder if Google OEM boxes or do they partner up with the likes of Sun and purchase X4100s

I'm sorry this isn't really related to your latest blog entry, but I'm pretty sure your the only one who could give me a clear answer to this. All I was wondering is if your company is holding off on the upcoming sli laptops until AMD comes out with their dual core mobile processors? I'm a big fan of VOODOO and AMD, but understand if for whatever reason you can't relay that information. I just heard that AMD's new dual core mobile chips will be out soon this year and I'm curious if that's true or not. I'm pretty excited to see how they stand up next to intel's core duo before I make any decisions. So that I may invest wisely in laptop is mainly what I'm going for. Whether to go for core duo now while its here or sit tight for the AMD's new mobile series. Besides all this thanks a lot for having your blog. I really feel like you help hardware enthusiasts like myself and others have a deeper fuller knowledge in the technology business.

thanks for the time,

I think AMD's ccHT is really the killer. The recent announcement of various co-porcessors opened the flood gate of specialized algorithm chips--now everyone can profit in the AMD64 space selling co-processors. This creates a food chain that can sustain a lot of business.

so this is another 10k dual processor systems? does that imply that this is their second batch?

are you saying dual processor or dual core?

so you think google has bought about 20k dual processor systems so far? thats 40k chips?

any idea who's making these boxes?

thanks!

Otellini sits on the board of directors at Google. This is temporary 'til Woodcrest.

I bet you wish it was only temporary.

Knowing the guys at Google I'm guessing they are using Supermicro boxes, but I can't say for sure.

No, we are holding off until they are actually stable. It has nothing to do with AMD, it's the ODM design - there are some last minute thermal issues being dealt with.

I'm a big fan of VOODOO and AMD, but understand if for whatever reason you can't relay that information. I just heard that AMD's new dual core mobile chips will be out soon this year and I'm curious if that's true or not. Whether to go for core duo now while its here or sit tight for the AMD's new mobile series.

No matter how well Core Duo does, AMD will gain market share in notebooks. There are many reasons for this - the main one being that ODMs usually make design wins months prior to launch. AMD has a bunch of design wins which haven't been debuted yet. From a technology point of view I like both AMD and Intel notebook offerings.

Besides all this thanks a lot for having your blog. I really feel like you help hardware enthusiasts like myself and others have a deeper fuller knowledge in the technology business.

Thank you.

This implies that Google is a busy company.

are you saying dual processor or dual core?

I'm saying Opteron 2P, which probably means 4 core.

Dell will introduce Opteron somehow.

Being on the board means nothing. Google works on the beat of their own drum. They will make decisions based on their own needs.
