PC Gamer: Dell XPS 720 vs HP Blackbird 002

There is a great set of articles on PC Gamer between this month and last month. PC Gamer Magazine performed a review of the Dell XPS 720 last month, and I managed to grab a clipping of it. While reviewing the Dell XPS 720 PC Gamer says:

"Walking behind the XPS 720 H2C subjects you to a volcanic blast of very hot air-this box will heat up an average-sized room..."

They then go on to say...:

"...though the XPS 720 uses a closed-system thermo-electric cooler for the CPU, the noise level remains over-the-top. The XPS 720 roars like a lion when you turn it on, the optical drives tend to rattle...the reverberation inside the case amplifies the noise from the hard drive so when the hard drives are defragging themselves, the XPS 720 sounds like it's making coffee, or choking on its own blood."

Ouch!

The review was very well written - quite pointed - and it's clear that PC Gamer went through the Dell system in detail. In addition to finding the Dell XPS 720 system unbelievably loud they also docked Dell for using a proprietary power supply and proprietary motherboard which totally limit easy upgrades for the customer.

All said, kudos to Dell for still scored a respectable 84%, though lower than any other Voodoo system in history, I've seen much worse from boutique companies who "specialize" in gaming machines.

HP Blackbird is more flexible (much more flexible) than the Dell XPS 720. Blackbird 002 also uses industry standard components, high performance parts, a much better tool-less chassis, and it's also much quieter.

Well, what do you know, a month later PC Gamer did a review of an HP Blackbird 002 engineering unit (the production unit is even nicer!!), and the results come out loud and clear (well, not as "loud" as the Dell, but the results are certainly clear).

Blackbird 002 scored the highest *ever* review in PC Gamer Magazine, besting even the highest score from VoodooPC (95%).

PC Gamer starts out by saying:

“It’s sophistication is evident even in the choice of standard components. Unlike last month’s XPS 720 H2C from Dell that shovelled in over a terabyte of storage and set the CPU to “fry,” HP masterfully balanced cost, heat, and performance with Intel’s quad-core 2 Extreme QX6850…and chilled by an exceptionally quiet custom cooler, and a pair of DirectX 10-compatible ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTXs in Crossfire….”

Then they talk about the balance of creating a machine that's not only delivers performance, but also blends technology with value. The following is a series of quotes borrowed from the review:

“The results? A screamer, handily trouncing systems from Dell, Falcon-Northwest, Alienware, and everyone else…but where most high-end rigs stop at the benchmarks to collect their awards, the Blackbird is just getting started….Virtually every inch of the Blackbird demonstrates craftsmanship with gamers first and foremost in mind…”

“In fact, after a night with the Blackbird, no dumbass on the planet will ever go back to thinking, for example, that it’s acceptable to have to rip out a nice cabling job just to change a hard drive.”

“..the Blackbird reaches a pinnacle of utility and craftsmanship that’s beyond anything in a gaming rig…”

"How do you get the highest hardware score in PC Gamer history? This is how."

You need to pick up both issues (Dell issue Farcry 2 is on the cover and HP issue Halflife 2 Orange Box is on the cover) in order to READ THESE REVIEWS! I only included the thumbnails above... There is also an excellent article on gaming with Windows Vista. Highly recommended!

final score:
Dell XPS 720 84%
HP Blackbird 002 97%

Hey Rahul,

I really like how you put "Ouch!" in big letters. You might as well put "Pwned!" right next to it... lol.

Yes, Dell was PWNED TO THE MAX! HA!

Hm, Dell has had at least a 2 year head start on you guys and you have already bested them. Congratulations, good first start.

Congrats on the "Blackbird!" I think we can see that you are pretty happy with it. ;)

What's been on my mind lately is Intel's recent purchase of Havok. There is also a rumor on [H] Enthusiast that Intel's new graphics card is coming out in mid-2008. And there are rumors from the Intel direction that hardware is ready for real-time ray tracing.

Any insights into what's going on, and how it might affect AMD, Nvidia, Ageia, game developers and the consumer? Or are gaming physics and ray-tracing mostly buzz words with no real impact?

Yada, yada, yada. Enough back slapping already. You've beaten them hands down, now do something useful like getting RoHS Compliance and a CE mark so we can buy one in Europe! :-)

Nice, I just did a Google for Dell XPS vs Blackbird and this was the #1 hit! I made my decision, thank you!

Blackbird received a 9/10 in Games for Windows magazine as well, they had some amazing things to say about it, congratulations to your team!

Funny no one on the Alienware forums are talking about Blackbird, I think they are modding the comments, ALX doesn't stand a chance from what I can tell.

Rahul

I saw the Blackbird 002 on the web. I just wanted to send you a note that it is AWESOME. I don't know if awesome can describe it. It's a work of art. Seriously I don't think I have ever seen a better looking machine! I don't game and I don't buy anything other than notebooks but I was tempted to whip out my credit card and buy it.

I have an XPS, it's okay but it does make annoying sounds. It looks mean on the outside, but damned if it's not a mess on the inside.

Rahul I just read the review of Blackbird in Games for Windows magazine, congrats on the 9/10!

Blackbird is cleaning up!!!! I tried starting a thread of it over at another forum but they removed it quickly.

Got to admit looks like an amazing system and I want one!

But HP are doing the same thing that Voodoo used to... ship to US and f*** the rest of the world. For all your bitching about Dell, at least they see this.

Wake up, there are over 200 million people in Europe and billions in the Far East. Two huge markets. But I guess you cant see this.

Ummm, I know its nitpicking, but Canada is not part of the US (that just gets under my skin, sorry). The systems are built in Canada. They are shipped within Canada as well as the US.

Rahul has already mentioned in a few interviews now that they are seeking to release this beast in Europe as well. Problem is that there are a LOT of regulatory hurdles to get over before that can be achieved.

Give it a bit of time... they'll be coming your was too I have no doubt.

How about a BlackBird laptop? (probably not in solid aluminium though)

How about a VooDoo branded Blackbird rather than a HP?

I'm sure it must be in the pipeline.

No wonder there are nothing but HP shills here. Talk about some comparative benchmarking between the blackbird and the XPS720H2C for a minute or two, why don't ya?

The last poster was retarded. the blog comments being approved by the author means that he has to approve them before they even show up. since your stupid hate comment showed up, then he obviously isn't getting rid of dell-supporting comments. its obviously just the fact that Dell sucks in every way, especially quality, that there aren't enough idiots to post comments supporting dell.

over something as stupid as benchmarking scores theres no reason to say that a machine of horrible quality beats the blackbird. quality is much more important, and i would much rather have a stable, fast system that has good support and upgrade ability than a system that even though it is SLIGHTLY faster, has poor quality, bad support, is based on an outdated BTX motherboard that is not upgradeable at all, and horribly ugly.

so, in conclusion, all of you idiot Dell lovers out there, the blackbird is quite possibly one of the greatest gaming systems ever. you shouldn't be embarrassed that you wasted your money on a dell. just stop trying to defend a lost cause.

Anyone talking about benchmarks in specific games: We allow you to choose Nvidia as well as ATI. Our system is a great value no matter how you look at it. The review you're speaking of went out with ATI to show our flexibility.

If you want benchmarks in those specific apps, buy Nvidia :)

... that's the beauty of Blackbird. Our system can be configured to your liking.

...and by the way, benchmarks should be weighed as only part of your purchasing decision - don't make them as your ONLY priority when making a buying decision or you could wind up disappointed.

I own a Dell XPS from a couple of years ago, never had major problems with it and the price is more reasonable than the VooDoo which would cost me my 2 kidneys, my two legs, and probably one of my arms. Believe me I'd love to own a Voodoo but ever since I read about the Blackbird I may reconsider getting my next gaming PC a Blackbird.

The Blackbird looks awesome, but the most interesting thing to come out of this is Crossfire on the Striker Extreme. Being a proud owner of the aformentioned board and a 1gb 2900, I'd love to know what's going on there..

So then.. is it a hardware or purely software mod? :P

Nice system But I think for most people price is a big selling point I setup an XPS Red and Black bird with the same components and we are talking ~ $1000 more for the bird, I would prefer the BBird because it uses standard parts BUT 1k more plus shipping/tax is too much, I've had Dell's for years with no problems, BUT if money was no issue I would get the BBird.
