I’ve always been into building and taking apart interesting things. I’ve also kind of never grown up.
When I was 15 years old, I built an RC helicopter from the ground up. I was obsessed with this thing. I tinkered on it for two months, and finally, after about two thousand dollars - which is big cash for a kid not to mention an adult - I went outside for my maiden flight. It was a rush. It went up in the air…and crashed in less than 35 seconds. It was totaled. I was devastated. I swore I would never do it again.
Fast forward to two weeks ago, and I’ve broken my word. I picked up a kick-ass, ready to fly RC helicopter for my kids. We spent some time setting it up and took it outside. I felt that same rush I felt when I was 15 when it started flying. I also felt the same crushing devastation when it crashed 29 seconds later.
This time, I held my temper—I’m a dad now, so what choice did I have?—re-built it, and took it up again. Success! And then, 30 seconds later, a fatal crash. The thing was destroyed. I went back to the store, bought some parts, re-built it—again—and left it on the shelf in my garage. It killed me, but I knew I couldn’t go through another humiliating nosedive in front of my kids.
So, I did what any self-respecting techie guy would do. I picked up an RC Flight Simulator, practiced the hell out of it on my Blackbird, and started sharpening up my RC controlling skills with my kids.
Oh, and I also bought an RC monster truck that goes 45MPH+, and though my wife thinks I’m nuts my kids love me.
Additionally, I bought a Blade 400—a 3D helicopter. I figure that my Mad Skillz that I’m honing on my Blackbird will keep me from chopping off my own head with the blades when this baby flies upside down.
The moral of the story is, you can give up, just don’t do it in front of your kids. …and if you want to work your fast twitch muscles for gaming while keeping your mind sharp, get an RC helicopter now – and don’t forget to order Real Flight G4 (it comes with a USB RC Controller as well) .

Dude, you suck. I gots that RC pwnage. Plus, I only have one kid to impress... not that that's working out either. However cool you think you are, your kids will expose you.
Need pictures.
Which RC Heli did you get?
yes, i cannot agree more with your feeling and action as a dad. Same for me here, i hold down my temper when i'm in front of kids, i become more patient as i know very well what my action / reaction will be watched closely and followed. :)
Have you tried RC boat? They are really cool and fast too. I did some blogging about one I saw (with video) at Bowness here,
